Chicago Cubs Trade Rumors: Matt Garza
The All-Star Game is officially behind us and can only mean one thing, trade season. The Chicago Cubs are certain to be sellers at this years deadline and include plenty of good pieces for contenders to add to make a Post-Season run. Matt Garza is the Cubs top trade piece and should return some quality prospects to their much improved farm system.
Chicago’s system is very good in terms of positional players, but are a year or two away to contribute to the big league team. Their pitching prospects are very thin and don’t have a top-tier prospect that will fly through the system. Pitching is a need for the Cubbies and will look to replenish the farm system through trades and looking to get their highest return through Matt Garza.
There have been many teams involved in rumors for Garza, with the Texas Rangers and Toronto Blue Jays becoming the favorites, with the Diamondbacks as a sleeper team to complete a deal. One rumor surprised everyone yesterday when Bob Nightengale came out saying that Jurickson Profar could be in play.
I just taped interview for @SportsTalkCHI with Bob Nightengale + he said that he believes Jurickson Profar is in play in Garza discussions.

Nightengale does believe that Profar’s stock has fallen and with the Ranger’s middle infield locked up for quit some time, he could be used for rotation help to win now. He was only speculating and personally only believe this is possible is if impending free-agent Garza signs an extension and includes one of the Cubs top positional prospects. The fact that Texas is in win-now mode, they can wait on a younger prospect, while the Cubs could benefit from Profar immediately. Before your get excited about the #1 prospect in the league in Cubbie pinstripes, it is most likely not going to happen with no real source of conversations between the two. It’s nice to dream though.
Another team interested in Garza is the Cleveland Indians. After spending lots of money in the offseason, Cleveland wants to win now and only 1.5 games behind Detroit, now is the time to strike. Sources have said that Cleveland is offering more of quality prospects, opposed to Texas, who is offering more in quantity. The Cubs are have said to want Trevor Bauer and Danny Salazar in a trade for Garza, but might be too much for a 2-3 month rental of Garza.
The sleeper to land Garza is the Arizona Diamondbacks, with Ian Kennedy struggling and a young pitching staff, Arizona could use a top of the rotation starter with postseason experience. Arizona have been linked to pitchers with more control past this season, but if they can agree to an extension before a trade, Arizona, in my opinion, has top pitching prospects the Cubs would be salivating over.
Based on multiple conversations throughout the day w/ personnel across the baseball spectrum Matt Garza will be a Diamondback in a few days.

Sources say Garza is most likely to be moved before his next start and should be gone by Saturday. A lot of teams are still interested, so it will be interesting to see who will become desperate enough to part with top prospects that the Cubs are demanding.
