Tomas struggled defensively at third base forcing the Diamondbacks hand to try him in left field which appears to be a work in progress. The 24-year old appeared in 24 games for the D’backs batting .257 with 2 home runs in 70 at bats. The power hitter also fanned 16 times while only managing to work a walk on 3 occasions during the spring.
The Diamondbacks brain-trust waited until the eleventh hour to announce their 25-man roster for Opening Day. The roster finalizing also saw the D’backs release veteran Cody Ross who is owed $8.5 million for the 2015 season.
Tomas will also join fellow countrymen Rusney Castillo who was optioned to the minors earlier in the week by the Boston Red Sox. The Sox signed Castillo to a $72.5 million dollar deal midway through the 2014 season however Castilo fell victim to a numbers game due to the log jam in the Red Sox outfield.

Tomas will go to Reno and work on his defense and stringing together consistent, productive at bats while he waits for the call back to the majors.
Even this nice little running snag by Tomas today was not enough to convince the Diamondbacks to keep him on the major league roster.
Tomas will be back in the desert donning the sedona red in short order, his contract almost guarantees that.
