FAN FUEL: JAYS ADD VETERAN LEADERSHIP WITH MARK DEROSA SIGNING
BY CLAYTON RICHER – FAN FUEL BLOGGER
The Toronto Blue Jays solidified their bench Tuesday adding veteran utility man Mark DeRosa to the roster. The Jays inked the soon to be 38-year-old to a one-year $750,000 contract with an option for 2014.
The signing more than anything sends a distinct message to fellow Jays players that there will be some accountability on the roster this time around. DeRosa is a consummate professional and has a reputation for being a positive influence and reliable clubhouse voice.
The Jays were rumoured to have had clubhouse rumblings last season and perhaps a lack of player accountability from former manager John Farrell, case in point the Yunel Escobar eye black fiasco.
The new additions of John Gibbons, Mark DeRosa, Henry Blanco, Mark Buehrle and the return of Darren Oliver should go a long way in preventing any unnecessary antics and hold players accountable for their actions both on and off the field.
