Fantasy Baseball

The most wonderful time of year is upon us as baseball poolies begin posturing and preparing for their annual fantasy drafts. If you are lucky enough to secure the first overall selection in your upcoming draft, you have probably already begun debating the merits of Mike Trout over Mookie Betts. Rest reassured you can’t go wrong with either pick.

Mike Trout has been the unanimous first overall pick for the past few campaigns, however, Mookie Betts has crept into the forefront and overtaken Trout in many pool enthusiasts’ minds. Yahoo Sports still has Trout crowned the favourite to go first overall with Betts and Nolan Arenado rounding out the top three.

The Betts gamble will in all likelihood yield a higher batting average and more stolen bases while Trout should outpace Betts in home runs and base on balls, according to offers seen on Canadian betting related sites. Last season Betts hit .346/.438/.640 with 32 homers and 30 stolen bases while Trout countered hitting .312/.460/.628 with 39 round trippers and 24 swipes. Betts is arguably hitting in a more potent lineup for the dangerous World Champions although the Angels offense is nothing to scoff it, it just doesn’t compare to the Red Sox.

Trout drew 122 bases on balls which often can be hard to come by when drafting a roster around power. Betts still held his own in the walks department drawing a career-high 81 of his own last season.  Depending on the specific categories in your pool, Betts lapped Trout in the double’s category stroking 47 compared to that of 24 by Trout.

The reigning MVP also had an advantage over Trout last season in runs scored and runs batted in, so it is obvious why poolies are showing Betts some love with their first overall selections in 2019. Both players remain on the field, so health is generally not a concern with either uber talents and both are safe bets to continue putting up impressive offensive numbers for years to come.

Regardless if you are one or two in the draft order, you are coming out with a no-brainer stud who you can craft the rest of your lineup around. So, who you got- Betts or Trout?
