The devastating news this morning that Miami Marlins ace Jose Fernandez passed away in a boating accident is just so hard for many around the country to process. One of the brightest stars the game of baseball has ever seen, is gone at just 24-years-old. Fernandez will be remember for the amount of lives he touched in just a short time in the game and energized and lit up each room he walked into.

Fernandez defected from Cuba in 2008 where he saved his mother from drowning in a search for a better life in the United States. He was selected as a first round pick in 2011 by Miami and had already overcome Tommy John surgery. Fernandez was an inspiration for many young fans around the game and his talent on the mound was second-to-none.

The Miami Marlins released a statement this morning, “The Miami Marlins organization is devastated by the tragic loss of Jose Fernandez. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family in this very difficult time. Today’s game against the Atlanta Braves has been cancelled.”

Details have still yet to emerge beyond Fernandez and two others being killed in an early-morning boating accident along the coast of Miami beach. Miami Fire Rescue arrived at the scene around 3 am and upon arrival reportedly found an overturned boat that crashed into the rocks.

Each time Jose Fernandez took the mound it was a spectacle, the love and passion he had for the game exuded with each and every pitch. This is a tragic loss beyond just the game, he was an inspiration and a leader. For the people of Miami, the Cuban fans and children who cheered him on, this day is one they never even thought imaginable.

In just 76 career starts, Fernandez was 38-17 with a 2.58 ERA and 589 strikeouts  over four big league seasons.

It’s hard to put it all into words, but Jose Fernandez touched so many lives in just the short time he had on this planet. My thoughts and prayers go out to all those affected by this terrible tragedy, especially his mother whom he was so close to and his pregnant girlfriend.

Jose Fernandez is gone at age 24, but he will not be forgotten. The passion and intensity he brought will stick with us all through the end of time.
