In what can only now be described as a comedy of casualties, the Texas Rangers added a few more injuries to their growing list in 2015. During Friday’s home opener starting pitcher Derek Holland left the game after the first inning with  tightness in his pitching shoulder. Holland never looked quite right during his one inning of work as his fastball  never topped 90 MPH.

Also during Friday’s game, outfielders Shin-Soo Choo (back spasms) and Ryan Rua (sprained right ankle) left the game early. The Rangers have not announced if any of the three players will miss significant amount of playing time.

If the injury to Holland, who missed time in spring training due to shoulder issues, will require the lefty to miss his next start, could there be a possibility that the Rangers promote prospect Alex Gonzalez?

Alex, also known as Chi Chi, fared well in Spring Training and over the course of 18 innings pitched, he held opponents to a .206 batting average and posted a 1.36 WHIP. More impressively Gonzalez flashed signs of stellar command and had a strikeout-to-walk ratio of over three (23 strikeouts and 7 walks). Many expected the 23-year-old to earn a spot in the Texas Rangers rotation but ultimately the Rangers decided to assign him to the minor leagues in an attempt to further his development. Most likely Holland’s injury, if severe, will not cause the front office to go against their original plan for Gonzalez and a call up remains unlikely. Instead the Rangers could turn to the newly acquired Wandy Rodriguez to replace Holland in the rotation. Also Anthony Ranaudo, who looked solid in last night’s outing for Triple-A Round Rock (5 IP 0ER 6 SO 0 BB) could also provide to be a reliable option for Texas.

After last year’s injury filled season, Texas Rangers fans have to be wondering if their franchise is cursed.
