Michael Pineda

Phil Hughes has not been pitching well at all for the New York Yankees.  He has to worry about that first but now Michael Pineda has made a few starts in the minor leagues without any trouble and he has looked really good.  Pineda was in AA Trenton on Tuesday night and pitched six shutout innings.  He said he thinks he will pitch there again on Sunday.  He may make a couple of more rehab starts and then be ready to go in the big leagues.

Hughes has not looked good and even Ivan Nova made a start the other day.  Nova looked good upon his return from AAA Scranton where he also looked good in a few starts there.  Nova had been struggling earlier in the year with the Yankees.  Joe Girardi has been showing faith in Hughes and still to this point has not said he would pull him out of the rotation.

The Yankees are a team in contention though and you wonder how long they will keep throwing him out there.  They are a team with a lot of injuries but they are pretty deep at starting pitcher and will get even more so with the return of Pineda in the near future.  I do think the Pineda will be put back in the rotation, as he is a top of the line starter.  Hughes is a pitcher who will become a free agent and his value is really taking a hit with his performance.  It will be interesting to see if the Yankees could even entertain trade offers for him before the trade deadline.

Pineda has looked sharp in his 3 rehab starts compiling an earned run average of 0.63  striking out 11 minor leaguers in 14.1 innings pitched between two levels. The 24-year old will be a breath of fresh air for the injury prone Yankees and a welcomed addition to their staff.
