The fresh faced 22-year old was the fourth overall pick in the 2012 amateur baseball draft and is currently ranked by Baseball America as the 26th best prospect in baseball. Gausman has made only 13 professional starts over two seasons with the Orioles affiliates. Gausman has spent this season with the Bowie Baysox posting a 2-4 record with a respectable 3.11 earned run average on a team that is .500 with a 21-21 record.
Gausman has averaged a strikeout an inning in his professional career fanning 62 hitters in 61.1 innings pitched. The Orioles are starving for pitching with the injury to Wei-Yin Chen and the recent return of Miguel Gonzalez. It was anticipated that veteran starter Jair Jurrjens would be promoted to make the start but that seems to have changed over the last day or two for the likes of Gausman.
The 6’3″ right hander last pitched on the 17th of May earning a 2-1 victory over the New York Yankees affiliate,Trenton Thunder . Gausman was nearly flawless tossing 6 innings of one run ball while fanning 10 Trenton hitters in his major league tune-up.
If the Orioles do in fact promote their blue chipper, he will climb the bump opposite Brandon Morrow who is slated to start for the Blue Jays on Thursday. Gausman could inject some life into the Orioles lineup as they are losers of 7 of their last 10 and boast a 24-21 record. 4 games behind the division leading New York Yankees.
The official word should come soon from the Orioles, if their prized possession will be making the trek north of the border for his major league debut.
