Romero & McGowan

Major League experience didn’t amount to much in the Buffalo Bisons contest against the Charlotte Knights at Coca-Cola Field Tuesday evening. Bisons faithful were treated to seeing both Ricky Romero and Dustin McGowan climb the hill in the same game, however both starters were roughed up in their quest to return north of the border.

The much maligned Ricky Romero took to the bump for the herd who showed no mercy on the struggling starter. Romero held the Knights at bay until coming unravelled in the 6th inning surrendering 3 runs without retiring a batter. The Knights only peppered Romero for 4 runs over 5 innings pitched, but the more concerning stat is the 6 base on balls Romero issued in the start. The former Blue Jays opening day starter has now issued 17 free passes in 12.1 innings pitched for the Jays triple A affiliate. Romero’s earned run average blistered to 8.76 in 3 starts since joining the second place Bisons.

The injury plagued Dustin McGowan also joined the Bisons on his comeback trail back to the majors. McGowan did not fare much better than Romero lasting only one third of an inning, after being touched up for 3 runs on 2 hits. McGowan is still recovering from a shoulder injury that has seen him sidelined since spring training.

The Bisons revolving door saw action again today as veteran pitcher Miguel Batista received his walking papers, outfielder Ricardo Nanita was promoted to the herd and hurler Chad Beck was placed on the disabled list.

The Bisons saw highly touted outfielder Anthony Gose get the call-up to the parent club earlier in the week and still have Jim Negrych knocking on the door with his league leading .394 average begging for a call-up. Negrych is proving he can sustain his torrid offensive pace and is as deserving as anyone of a major league opportunity.

Exciting times in Buffalo for Bisons fans, plenty of great baseball being played.
