Who Is Hunter Greene?

Yesterday was the first and second rounds of the 2017 MLB Draft and there is one player in particular who stands out above all of the other budding young stars. That player’s name is Hunter Greene and he is going to become a household name very quickly. As of right now, he’s a star only in the baseball community, but after being drafted #2 overall by the Cincinnati Reds yesterday, people should start paying attention to him.

Greene is the next great phenom in sports. He’s an 18-year-old pitcher/shortstop from California who was featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated just a month ago. Greene is an African-American superstar in a sport that desperately needs one and he is very aware of what role he can play to grow the game in that community. His feature in Sports Illustrated goes over how the big righty not only excels on the mound but also in school and in his community. He seems wise beyond his years.

Add all that to what he can actually do in between the lines and you’ve got a kid any franchise should want to have. Greene is a true two-way star who wants to remain one, but the Reds drafted him as a starting pitcher. He throws high 90’s on the mound and tops out at 102 while mashing 400-foot home runs and making slick plays in the field. He’s been compared to Alex Rodriguez, Babe Ruth, Bryce Harper and he’s been called “baseball’s LeBron.” The hype for this kid is real and it is spectacular.

I’m frankly amazed that he didn’t go #1 overall last night to the Minnesota Twins, but the Reds grabbed him and are hoping he can be a transformative star. I’ll be excited to see what happens with his two-way ability and if the organization lets him test it out. I’ll also just be excited to monitor his ascent to the big leagues because I’m sure that he’s the next big thing. If you haven’t heard about him yet, look him up and remember his name. He’s going to be a legend.
