With Spring Training coming to a close and with the start of the MLB regular season just six sleeps away, it appears that one of the final roster spots for the Texas Rangers will be to either Delino DeShields or Carlos Peguero.

Despite a dreadful spring, the Rangers front office still appears to be very high on DeShields with whom the Rangers took in last winter’s Rule 5 Draft. After play on Monday, DeShields is currently hitting .235 with an on base percentage of just .278. Even though the outfielder has struggled this spring, according to Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News, GM Jon Daniels is “seriously considering” keeping him on the Opening Day roster. If what Grant is reporting is true, than most likely Peguero will optioned to the minor leagues to start the year.

Peguero came into Spring Training as a long shot to make the roster. However after tearing up the Cactus League, he has forced first year manager Jeff Banister into making a tough decision about what to do with the 28-year-old. Peguero presents more of a power threat for Banister’s lineup, 30 home runs for Kansas City’s Triple-A affiliate last season, he is still searching for his home run swing. Although he has only hit one homer this spring he has still managed to slash .350/.435/.500.

The Rangers know all too well not to put too much stock into Spring Training stats after outfielder Michael Choice’s disastrous 2014 campaign. Still, Peguero has looked good enough to earn the final spot on the roster behind Ryan Rua and Jake Smolinski who are seen as locks to win two of the three spots on the bench. Peguero’s inability to play all three outfield positions may be the reason that Banister ultimately selects DeShields as it will offer him much more versatility in the outfield.
