Yasiel Puig is to hold a charity poker tournament event at the Dodger Stadium on 22nd May. The Los Angeles Dodger outfielder is aiming to raise money for his charity, The Wild Horse Foundation, which was set up back in 1995 to prevent the mistreatment of equine animals as well as provide shelter, food and medical care.

The Wild Horse Poker Tournament is open to the public, with tickets starting at $300 for entry. The poker game itself will be a $700 buy-in tournament. To put that into perspective, one of the biggest online games has a $215 buy-in, but large live events regularly charge several hundred or even thousands for a stack of chips.

In any case, it is worth remembering that this is poker tournament for charity, and proceeds go to a worthwhile cause, and not into the back pocket of the winner. The Wild Horse Foundation delivers food and gifts to underprivileged people in economically deprived areas and situations, as well as supplying school goods and athletic equipment.

Sponsorship packages are also available for those who want to contribute a little more to the table. For between $5k and $20k sponsors can enjoy VIP packages that include multiple entries to the poker tournament, signed baseballs, tickets to dodgers games for a charity of their choice, gift bags, and a meet-and-greet with Puig and Dodger’s teammates.

For those who would rather not sit down at the poker tables, the Wild Horse Event offers a sensual delight of gourmet food and drinks, and there will be music, fun, and games, silent and live auctions full of unique items to bid on for charity. There will also be celebrities in attendance, including comedian George Lopez.

Yasiel Puig is a well-known player, as much for his controversy as for his skills as a baseball player. He came to the US from Cuba in 2012, and batted an extremely sharp season with the Dodgers in 2013, quickly becoming a prolific celebrity as he batted a .319 in 104 games.

It seemed like Puig would be the baseball superstar of the century, but he seemed to decline in seasons to follow, clashing with managers, lacking defensive qualities, and getting himself benched. In 2015 he was out due to injury.

Yet 2017 has been a more solid season for the Dodger’s legend, and he has returned to good form with a .273 over 16 games, and four home runs. What many people do not know about Puig is that he came from an under-privileges background himself, and earned just $17 a day back in Cuba. The Wild Horse Foundation is close to him because he can give back, and help people who were in a similar situation.

Yasiel Puig might be known for his sometimes outrageous acts, and for his equally outrageous batting skills, but this year he will take up the spotlight for his upcoming poker tournament event, and the money he raises for the Wild Horse Foundation, and those who benefit.

The Dodgers are currently third in the NL West National Major League Baseball standings.
